JAPAN PROCESS
Starting work that was inspired by the trip to Japan was quite challenging. I knew I wanted the new work to encapsulate the spirit and unique qualities of Japan without resorting to anything verging on pastiche.
Below are a few images of how ideas begin mostly by sketched thoughts and collaged pieces which through a process of development and rejection formulate a new design.
Significant thoughts: the immediacy of an ink brushstroke - the translucency and layering of papers and fabrics and the contrast of hard and organic. Selected colour choices are based on a Japanese palette black/gold/grey/lacquer red
